Transgender Hormone Therapy Research

Starting the summer of 2024, I have been working with endocrinologist, Dr. Sharini Venugopal, conducting research on the preferred method of gender-affirming hormone therapy, and assessing current barriers to accessing care for transgender patients.

We recently submitted an abstract on our research, “Preferences and Barriers to Hormone Replacement Therapy in the Transgender Population” to the Endocrine Society Meeting 2025 to be presented at the Annual Conference in 2025 in San Francisco.

Clinical Research at MedStar Shah Oncology Infusion Center

While shadowing Oncologist Dr. Anish Nanavati during the summer before my junior year, I wondered if music would aid patients in the process of receiving chemotherapy infusion treatments.

During my clinical research at the MedState Shah Oncology Infusion Center, I asked patients to listen to their favorite music on their headphones while they received their chemotherapy treatments. I asked them to rate their mood before and after their treatment. I surveyed male and female adult patients, between the ages of 26 and 85.

Through this research, I discovered that 100% of patients reported an increase in their mood after listening to music. One patient, female, age 44, reported that listening to msuic during her treatment made her feel relaxed and even made the time go by faster than usual. Another patient, female, age 66, said, “Music puts me in a better frame of mind. It lifts my spirit. Music makes me happy, and brings me joy.”
